To spray or not to spray?

Updated: Mar 27, 2022

That is the Question for today.....

I am going to make an enemy out of a lot of you by writing this, but here goes.

A beautiful leather bag is crafted in an atelier. It is shipped from said atelier to an elegant boutique.

You as a discerning handbag buyer, buy stunning bag. You are so delighted with it, you want to keep it looking as new as possible as long as possible…..

So you decide to spray it with a protective spray.

I am going to tell you ‘my’ truth. Because I spent a lot of my time stripping these residuals off bags.

When some of you spray, you spray from say 20 cm away. But others spray from 50cm away. There is a difference in what coating ends up on the bag. The size of droplets is quite different. Some of you spray evenly. Some of you really don’t.

I say when in doubt, don’t spray at all.

Especially on light colours.

On light colours, the coating will change over time, at potentially a different rate than the leather on your bag ages……

If you must, a better option is to ask your bag spa to give it a protective coating instead, typically done with a foam instead of a spray, this way at least it is uniformly done across the entire bag….

Instead of the above, please consider using your Chanel buffing cloth if you have one. It is given to you for a reason. If you don’t have one, a hotel shoe mitt is also perfect for the job. That kind of soft texture lint free cloth.

Buffing leather every now and then adds a natural protective coating to your bag. It can protect within reason against extensive colour transfer and weather elements. Not extensive rainfall, but yes it can protect against small droplets.

I hope this helps some of you. I am really not trying to preach, just give you an alternative, but I think better and more natural way of caring for your bags your precious acquisitions that cost so much of your hard earned money.
